What We Do

We are an Independent Statutory Office of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. This means we work independent of any government direction in carrying out our mandate.

We protect and represent your rights, interests and view points if you are under the age of 19 and living in Newfoundland and Labrador. If you have been in a care or custody arrangement, our services extend up to your 21st birthday. This may involve an individual child or youth, or groups of children and youth.

We help you speak up for yourself, we speak up with you, or we speak up for you. We listen to your views and feelings and help you have your say when decisions are being made about you. We believe people making decisions about your life can make better decisions if they understand your point of view.

The voices and rights of young people are very important to us, and guide our advocacy work on a daily basis. We have our own legislation which is the Child and Youth Advocate Act. Our advocacy work is guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
